How To Teach A Puppy To Sit, Without Touching It
When we started to train dogs, twenty-five years ago, we were taught to push the pups back down as you told it to sit. It worked, but my Jack Russell Terrier did not like it at all, and a lot of the other dogs in the class objected as well. Our English Springer Spaniel, bought at the same time, was more amenable, but it was a case of forcing the animal to obey.
When I started training the spaniel to do gundog work, I stumbled across an old book in a second-hand bookshop in Chepstow. There I learned new ways of training dogs. Inspired by this book, I became an avid reader of all things dog. I collected books old and new, discarding those that did not gel with the new way of looking at things that I was developing.
Time went on, we lost our first two dogs and were bringing up a family as well as running a business. We moved away from the South West of England up to the Scottish Borders, tried falconry and ferreting, and eventually felt we had time to take on another dog. This time we went with a German Shorthaired Pointer, Shale, shown in the picture below of two GSPs pointing a rabbit - he is the dark one in the foreground.

This time we did not go the confrontational, YOU WILL DO AS I MAKE YOU route, and taught the dog by the older techniques we had learned, working with the dog instead of against it. Now I have come to realise that the dog we had was naturally talented, and the approach we took of making him part of the team was ideal for him, but the truth is I think he woud have been spoiled by the ways we had originally learned.
Now I have told you about our journey...
... I will tell you what we are doing at the moment. We are developing eBooks bringing out the best techniques we have discovered. We are also sending out a fortnightly newsletter with a lesson in, plus one or two articles that we think may be of interest. I will also review one of our books each edition.
...I will tell you how to make a puppy sit!
Take a treat in your right hand, let the pup smell it (works best if the pup is hungry, doesn't really have to be a treat, can be its lunch).
Lift the treat up and over the pups head, and as its bum touches the floor say Sit! (Quietly or you will end up with a dog you have to shout at).
After a few goes at this, you will find the pup will sit quite happily when told or when the right hand is raised. Reduce the number of times you give it a treat or it will get bored. Eventually give up the treats more or less, and just ask the dog to sit when you are giving him or her their meals.
The eBook is not complete - when it is we will start charging for it. BUT there is enough in it to make it worth your while to download it we believe. And... anyone who downloads one before it is complete will be given a complimentary final version as long as they are still signed up to our newsletter! Guaranteed!
