We have moved! And I have never seen so many Roe Deer!
Back in July we finally found a house that we wanted to move into. After ten years in rented accommodation we moved into our new home in September. There are some drawbacks; not least the wildlife has changed considerably since we left the farm and moved to a housing estate.
However there is one major benefit from my point of view (besides the proximity of the sea) and that is the number of roe deer I now see on a regular basis. In the three or four months we have been here, we have counted up to 21 deer in two fields… and regularly count deer into the 10+ level, several other times we have counted 19.
Now I know that roe do sometimes form loose associations. The only time I have been roe-stalking we came across 5 deer feeding in the same place, a doe with two kids at foot, and an adult buck with a yearling feeding next to him. But I was under the impression that they are essentially solitary animals… Desperate to hear from anyone who has seen similar numbers. What is the largest number of roe seen in a couple of fields?
p.s. one less today – doe dead at the side of the road. Disappeared when I drove past a couple of hours later, they don’t seem to hang around long here…

Well we have been here a few months now, and I think there have not been many days during which I have not seen deer. Just now I saw nineteen as I drove home, and from my study as I type this I can count three.
